In May of 1861 George enlisted in Battery A, First Michigan Light Artille ry and was later transfered to the Army of the Cumberland. He served thr ee years and was engaged in several battles in West Virginia and Virgini a. He returned home to farm and owned 140 acres.
He married Mary and they had five children.
He was a member of the Prohibitionist Party and the Baptist church.
The family is listed in the 1880 census at Hadley, Michigan. George was l isted as a farmer and his wife's name is Permilia. They lived with all fi ve children as well as Genevieve C. (his adopted daughter; Permilia's daug hter from previous marriage) and Titus Seymore (cousin) in the home.
