| Shared Note: - James moved with his parents to Rogersville, Stueben County, New York in 1837 and in 1838 to Rushford, Allegeheny County, New York. In 1840 he ca me to Hadley, Lapeer County, Michigan. He moved to the farm where he liv ed for many years in 1844.
James and Lucina had five children. He was a student at Lima Institu te in New York, taught school in New York, and again in Hadley for sever al years.
The 1880 census lists him at Hadley, Michigan with his wife, Lucina and so ns, Millard and Cassius. He is listed as a farmer (disabled).
James was elected school inspector for eight years. He bought eighty acr es of land in section 24 of Hadley Township from the state in 1856. He fa rmed for about forty-six years. In 1861 he started handling farm machine ry and became a manufacturer's agent. He was a member of the Methodist Ep iscopal Church and held a number of positions. He held all the township o ffices except highway commissioner and treasurer and was justice of the pe ace for more than sixteen years. In 1872 James and Lucina bought l ot 3 of block 2 in Hadley. In 1883 he was an officer of Masonic Lodge 21 0. In 1898 James and several descendants posed for a picture. He identif ied all the people in the picture and sent it to his sister, Hannah, in Io wa. The 1900 census shows him in Hadley as a boarder and landlord.
Politically he was a member of the Whig party but joined th new Republic an party. He was also a member of the free and accepted Masons as we ll as other secter societies.
